Ayalytical Instruments offers both an unsulfonated residue system, fully compliant with ASTM D483, and a sulfonation number apparatus, compliant with ASTM D1019, IP 145, IP 3840, and ISO 3840.
The unsulfonated residue system provides an indication of the degree of refinement of petroleum plant spray oils. The volume of sample unabsorbed after shaking with concentrated sulfuric acid comprises the unsulfonated residue in the sample. Designed with maximum productivity and efficiency in mind, this versatile instrument is a combination mechanical shaking machine, electric hot water bath, and centrifuge with a capacity for four sulfonation flasks for the simultaneous testing of multiple samples. The highly reliable shaking machine is calibrated to provide uniform control of shaking rates of 300-500 cycles per minute over 10 minute intervals for advanced accuracy, and is equipped with a stopwatch for precise timing. The stainless steel water bath heats samples safely and quickly to 100C, is fit with a hinged cover for easy access, and permits the emersion of flasks at depths required by ASTM standards.
Unlike models offered by competitors, Ayalytical Instruments unsulfonated residue apparatus includes an ASTM-recommended centrifuge for simple completion of method, separating the unsulfonated residue from the heated sample at the ASTM recommended rate of 80-100 RPM. The meticulous design of this centrifuge includes a steady anti-vibration table for superior balancing of samples during the testing process, and a star wheel with four rings, each swinging up to 90, allowing for automatic positioning of test tubes with maximum stability and precise alignment sans manual adjustment. With amaximum rotation speed of 2000 RPM and a 482.6 mm maximum rotation diameter, the relative centrifugal force of the centrifuge apparatus is easily adjustable for compliance with ASTM testing standards. The centrifuge speed is controlled mechanically for maximum precision, and can be monitored via an easy-to- read digital display. The instrument is further equipped with digital timer and optional automated brake to be applied when the timer runs out. An optional electric heater is controlled via digital thermoregulator PID with over temperature alarm, regulating temperatures from ambient to 80C. For operator safety, the explosion-resistant centrifuge is incapable of rotation while the chamber lid is open.
Additionally, the unsulfonated residue system comes fully equipped with convenient removable carrying tray for quick transport of flasks between shaking machine and bath, four standard graduated sulfonation flasks, and four buckets with polyurethane support. Ayalytical Instruments sulfonation number apparatus is ideal for the determination of olefinic plus aromatic hydrocarbons in gasolines, kerosene's, napthas, and other petroleum distillates substantially free from butanes and butenes. This instrument is comprised primarily of the same shaking machine and centrifuge as the unsulfonated residue apparatus, sans the hot water bath. The sulfonation number apparatus comes fully equipped with a standard graduated sulfonation flask, four buckets with rubber mats, and four ice water jars.
